Chicago White Sox Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on an Major Multi-Million Dollar Contract.
In a notable move for their retooling roster, the American League club have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a lucrative contract bringing in the accomplished player.
Deal Structure and Player Perks
The contract grants a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16M for the 2026 season and $17M for the final year.
Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for earning the league MVP award.
- $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for placing fourth through 10th.
- An identical bonus for winning the ROY honor.
The contract also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his approval and grants him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the deal. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..
Posting Fee and Historical Context
As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows would also receive a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami will become the fourth-ever Japanese-born to suit up for the South Siders, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 in February, enters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a 60-102 season, placing last in the AL Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.
A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, breaking the single-season record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was limited to just 56 appearances due to an side strain. Even with fanning often, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing mainly at first base, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.
WBC Heroics
Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a walk-off double that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic one-run win. The next night in the title match against the United States, he hit a tying home run in the second inning, helping Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.
The power hitter is set to be officially presented at a media availability on the coming Monday.
