Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the images originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
