A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the 40-year-old media personality was accosted by a trio of assailants, one of whom shot at him before escaping on foot.

The reason of the attack is unknown and no one has been arrested have been made, as per the official statement.

Details of the Attack

Police said that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a building close to the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the site supervising the implementation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, it was reported.

"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities said.

Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocked hair and clad in what resembled a security uniform opening fire on Stock before running away.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but fell down across the street.

It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and it was not a robbery during the attack.

Key evidence, like cartridges, were found at the location.

Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.

"We know they covered significant ground after the shooting, and investigators have been tracking them to find their location," added an official.

His sister, Nicole Stock, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am devastated. I don't have words," she stated.
"It is clear he was a voice for many people. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were prepared to tackle. This is a devastating blow."

She urged the public to refrain from sharing disturbing footage from the scene, saying this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's children.
