Norrie Calls 'Biggest Triumph' Following Fighting Back to Defeat Carlos Alcaraz in the Paris Masters
The British tennis star earned the most notable win of his career by coming back from a set down to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the Paris Masters.
Although he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this win represents Norrie's initial success over a sitting world No 1.
"Massive. Extremely important for me," said Norrie, who joins as the fifth UK male player in history to overcome a global number one. "Coming back from health issues last year, I lost in the opening stage of qualies here. I just sought to appreciate my tennis in the second half of the year. To achieve a victory like this, it's the biggest success of my professional life, my maiden triumph over the top player and likely the most confident player in the sport right now."
Norrie, positioned No 31, also ended Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 consecutive elite tournament victories, which marked the best series of outcomes in the young champion's developing career.
Contest Analysis
The top seed looked to be advancing smoothly to success early on as he eased in the opening set. However, Norrie gradually battled back back into the game by serving with sharper placement and engaging the Spanish opponent into extended, physical exchanges. His persistent shot tolerance and dependability slowly took its toll.
Through most of the contest, the world number one served well but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old seemed especially uncomfortable executing his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the game for most of this season, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 errors. Opposing him, the British player presented his opponent very few errors, maintaining his consistency, fitness and depth throughout while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to force himself inside the baseline and attack well.

Following struggling for an extended period due to a significant physical setback and challenges with his form, Norrie fell as low as 91st in the rankings this year. Following appearances in the last eight at Wimbledon and the French Open second week subsequently, this triumph further underlines the veteran's progress as he seeks to come back to the elite rankings and beyond. Alcaraz, notwithstanding his incredible accomplishments, is still hasn't figure out how to produce his top form indoors.
