The Chainsaw Man Film Dominates Domestic Box Office in First Weekend

Did Sony done it again? Coming after the triumph of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed over $600 million at the box office, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the $100M milestone globally, reaching a worldwide gross of $108M in its opening frame. This feature beat out Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its second week in movie houses, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Impressive American and Global Performance

Helmed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a straightforward follow-up of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It brought in $18.2 million in North America after a strong $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday take. Overseas, the animated by MAPPA film grossed $14.7 million across 46 Sony markets, pushing its worldwide total to over $60 million through Sony distribution (over $43 million overseas, $18.2 million stateside). Sony has yet to announce its complete box office tally.

Comparisons to Previous Successful Anime Films

Promotional firm White Box Entertainment previously spoke, drawing parallels between the movie's expected results to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made thirty-four million dollars in the domestic market in 2022 and opened to a nearly identical eighteen million dollars in the U.S.. Reze Arc’s opening frame aligns with that standard, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar worldwide total currently tracks slightly below the earlier film's over $166 million total earnings. Even if it doesn't seem possible the Reze Arc movie will match the numbers of smash success the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a huge win for the studio.

Marketing Efforts Drive Box Office Dominance

The studio and its partner Crunchyroll have skillfully used community involvement to boost their supremacy at the animated movie market. This film's marketing campaign kicked off at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in the month of July with a MAPPA presentation, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, followed by a major presence at NYCC featuring exclusive clips, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. Moreover, organizers held an private showing for enthusiasts for general audiences and influencers alike after the concluding day of the event.

What’s Next

This year marks a major time for animated films, and for Sony, which has another feature-length anime releasing in 2025 in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
