The Contents of the Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode has them witness again a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the secret to his downfall for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern
Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a telescope taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a dimension later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the mine shaft was that very thief.
So, What's in the Case?
Given what is understood of Brenner's work, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
A second theory, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The prequel shows that Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he battles the control of a sinister presence, much like how Will Byers was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he commands the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to become stronger.
This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the series finale to come.
