The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
