The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

A freshly coined initialism came to light a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is found only in Gaza, per insights from doctors including paediatricians. Normally, it is unusual for medical staff to care for a minor who has lost their entire family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in scores of doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs contend that violations are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, just as it disavows each claim it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, we are told, is what international harmony resembles.

The contest, notably banned Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision turns 70 next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A competition that once promoted peace has transformed into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
