The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with his partner, announced how he will personally create the controversial product within a personal series highlighting issues the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators versus Corporate Owner
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing conflict between the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed that the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video how he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for support for Palestinians due to its coloration, which mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Current Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen stated that he will create other ice cream flavors that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
