The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
