The Whites Keep Liverpool at Bay to Secure Hard-Fought Point at Anfield

Two undefeated runs continued intact at Anfield, but solely one team could take real contentment from the result. Daniel Farke's men carried out a textbook strategy of stifling and containing Liverpool, with the maiden scoreless draw of Arne Slot's reign underscoring the persistent issues within the current champions' recent recovery.

Defensive Display Secures Vital Point

A lacklustre goalless draw, the first in 84 fixtures for Slot's team, was largely due to the immense solidity of the outstanding defensive duo Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk, coupled with the home side's inability to unlock a compact Leeds defence. Liverpool were limited to hopeful half-chances, and a smattering of boos could be heard around the famous ground at the full-time whistle on a sluggish display.

"Should I don't use the entire group and we have a schedule like this, I would never make changes," Daniel Farke stated. "For a player like Dominic I have to protect him. We all are aware his past history was challenging. He is in incredible shape but it's vital I look after him and sometimes the mind needs to prevail over the emotion."

Liverpool's Struggle in Front of Goal

Arne Slot's team initially showed more energy and precision than in previous matches, with Jeremie Frimpong prominent on the right side. However, clear-cut opportunities were scarce. Their best moments in the first half involved striker Hugo Ekitiké.

  • Following a smart one-two with Curtis Jones, the France international drifted infield and drew a save from goalkeeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
  • The visitors' goalkeeper spilled the shot, requiring a crucial block from James Justin to stop Florian Wirtz tapping in the rebound.
  • Ekitiké later raced clear onto a long ball but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; despite not going down, his appeals for a penalty were waved away.

Spurned Opportunities Prove Costly

Ekitiké's evening worsened when he did not manage to find the net with his clearest chance. Meeting a swift Frimpong delivery in the goal area, the attacker misdirected a header that struck the goalkeeper while facing an unguarded net.

At the other end, their clearest sight of goal came from an Alisson error. The Brazilian shot-stopper sent a careless pass directly to disruptor Ethan Ampadu, whose instant shot back down the centre was saved by the alert Alisson.

Turgid Final Stages

The contest deteriorated into a scrappy affair, devoid on quality. The midfielder, back from a ban, forced a save from Perri from range. The subsequent scramble led to Ampadu handling the ball, giving Liverpool a set-piece in a dangerous position, which Wirtz sent into the defence.

The Liverpool manager introduced a three substitution to bring urgency, and soon after Virgil van Dijk came close to heading his team in ahead from a corner, his effort bouncing just past the post.

Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin believed he had extended his goal run for Leeds in the final stages, but his finish was ruled out for a tight offside call. Ultimately, both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
