The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in English Test Series Squad
England have chosen a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected spot.
Bashir's inclusion indicates that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man group, showing there are no doubts about their fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted several previous Tests.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the more likely choice.
Spin Options Considered
Previously there was speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the lower order.
However the coach has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
