Torrential Downpours Worsen Situation for Evacuated Palestinians in Gaza, UN Alert
Persistent rains over the last seven days have compounded the extremely difficult living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of uprooted residents in the Gaza Strip, as stated by aid organizations.
"Terrible" Night Brings Grave Threats
A representative detailed the weather overnight as "awful", with precipitation so intense that as much as 15cm (6in) of water accumulated on the terrain.
"The recent weather was really horrendous for the people. The downpours were so strong... And the gales were so strong," said the official.
Authorities voice grave concern that children sheltering in makeshift shelters in damp attire will fall victim to hypothermia and other sicknesses.
Deaths and Extensive Damage
Medical officials have reported that one baby has died from the cold and a minimum of 11 other people have lost their lives in building collapses triggered by the storms.
Other reports suggest a increased death toll. Officials stated that several residential buildings had collapsed completely and many others had sustained partial collapse.
- Nearly 55,000 families harmed by flooding.
- More than 40 designated safe spaces inundated.
- Numerous individuals compelled to find new shelter.
Relief Distribution Deemed Not Enough
Groups have increased deliveries of shelter, warm covers and garments after the truce started, but they emphasize there is continues to be not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Officials are striving constantly to bring in that relief and to hand it out, but the scale of the needs is so immense that we still have a great number of individuals and children who are genuinely suffering nightly," warned one representative.
Ongoing Concerns and Truce Provisions
The next stage of the ceasefire involves plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the pullback of military forces, and other conditions.
Relief bodies have stressed the necessity for "greater and continuous humanitarian assistance to respond to immediate and ongoing needs."
The hostilities was initiated by an assault in late 2023. Later actions have caused a high number of casualties in the region, as per medical reports.
